Thanks for all the advice.

It may not have been clear from my initial post, but actually plain  
text is the less desirable option, since it involves a lot of typing.

Adding a layer that can be switched on/off at will, as Rodney  
suggested, seems to be indeed the best way to go about it. I can  
actually scan in the text-boxes needed and use them as an image  
without having to generate them by typing everything in Photoshop.
