Hi Mark,
For color selections in VASSAL components, this one is in the FAQ
(http://wiki.vassalengine.org/doku.php?id=faq_modules#how_do_i_have_text_labels_with_a_transparent_background)
and applies to all color selections.
Click on the Color Select Button. Then click on the Cancel button
immediately. This will close the color selector and set the Background Color
swatch to show the word 'nil'. Transparent color is now selected.
As Gary noted, if you are creating your own images, you can add an Alpha
channel using your favourite graphics program save your image and a .gif or
.png (better).
