hi all,

new to the message board here- name's bruce. bruce, bruce... okay, enough of
that.

i've been using vassal for a month or so now and just completed a (many turns)
game of
TK with a friend. we found vassal to be pretty excellent. anyway, started
another game a
few days ago with another friend, and all's going well, but when the new
version auto-
downloaded today- we got hosed. now when i try to load in games saved by
vassal 2.4.2,
all i get is a rather terse message saying "null" in the vassal message window.

i'm on G4 mac running OS X. like i said before, 2.4.2, aside from a few
seemingly mac-
only relics, ran quite nicely. i cannot load games into 2.5 which were saved
in 2.4.2 that
were made either on my mac or on my friend's pc.

what i've done is try to back out to 2.4.2 again, which has been somewhat
successful. i
found the java web start cache and got rid of the 2.5 folder, and then found a
file called
runVassal.jar which starts version 2.4.2. except that there are new problems.
now when i
try to scale the map, it says that i have run out of memory, which is highly
unlikely (1.25
Gb), at least under what i would consider normal operation (?)

my guess is that when version 2.5 self-installed that some classes/resources
outside of
the 2.5 directory were fiddled with (?)

the best thing of course is if the problem i'm having with version 2.5 can be
fixed, but if
that's a ways off, then would it be possible for version 2.4.2 to be made
available again at
a different url? i'm hoping i might be able to get another clean install of
2.4.2.

anyways, no matter what, thanks for all the work on this engine. what a
fantastic gizmo!

cheers,

bruce

p.s. i'm a pretty experienced java programmer and would be willing to work to
pay my
way here, so to speak...
