Ok,
A bit more testing reveals it is indeed a JRE issue. My earlier testing was
actually all with JRE 1.4.2_8.
With JRE 1.5.0_6 correctly turned on, VASSAL 2.5 works correctly and happily
loads vassal 2.4 save files with no extra memory required.
With JRE 1.4.2_08 turned on, the memory footprint blows out.
