There aren't any hooks to trigger an action when a unit is selected, so you
won't be able to turn on/off an Area of Effect automatically. (It's
somewhat expensive to compute and filll the area, so it's not practical to
do it on every mouse click, for example.) The Java API does give you a hook
if you're willing to plug in some custom Java code -- you can set the Map's
Highlighter.
