Could you also create the "maps" as counters and set them to rotate at 90degree intervals--that would also allow you to position them in non-standard ways next to each other as well? --guy

You can reverse them. My work-around: In your graphics/paint program, rotate the maps 90 degrees. Then use those maps for your horizontal layout. You could have both vertical and horizontal images for each map. That way you could align them how you wish.
