It is difficult as most if not all of the code is in the public domain. If any one upset your "special properties" then they wouldnt be able to benefit from them and would have to re download the module.
I'm not sure how editing anything in Vassal can do that unless you have discovered a bug. As for protection , to use material you need the copyright owners permission If I wish to use a particular mechanism I always ask and have never been refused and I allow others to use any methods of "mine".
