I was afraid of that. :(  I suspected it might be a lost cause, the game
saves unzipped looked like some kind of assembler source code.

May I suggest that you think about supporting two formats of save files. 
One XML format that could be used by developers to define scenarios for
the modules, and a second "default" format for players, which could be
terribly obfuscated beyond recognition.
