OK, I've tried it now, downloading the beans version.
It's better than the other free software for PDF I
tried. There are still some things which don't show
up quite right (font issues), and some PDF files which
will not open. (Including the PDF 1.6 specification
document from Adobe). But it seems like this may be
a reasonable item to use. The interface I tested was
AWT rather than Swing. The Viewer class is a subclass
of Applet, but the drawing from the PDFDocument seems to
go to an java.awt.Image object, so it should be usable
with Swing components.
