In The Longest Day, many batallion-sized units have a third "remnant" step
(obviously) not printed on their counters. Because remnants can be rebuilt,
it is essential that there be some way to match remnants with the batallions
they were (in the printed game, each remnant is numbered, and there's a
numbered display in which to store remnanted units). Because there are a
limited number of remnant tokens (by design: when you have no spare remnants,
batallions reduced below their second step are eliminated instead---it reduces
counter density and discourages the stockpiling of replacement units), it
would be incorrect to add a third remnant layer to every three-step batallion.

What I'd like to do is the following: One key cycles through the steps
of a unit. When reducing a unit from half-strength to a remnant, the
lowest-numbered unused remnant of the appropritate type is swapped for
the unit token; and when adding replacements to a remnant, the unit
represented is swapped back in.

Does anyone know of a good way to do this?
