Hi, Everybody...
Well, I saw a bit ago that Oct. is contribution month at Vassal.
However, as I clicked through to donate my $10, I was prevented by
some error. Does anyone know how to get PayPal to work for this?
On another matter... I completely understand the desire to honor the
copyright of games played via Vassal. I wish to do that, too. But I
find it too exasperating for me to pay premium amounts for
out-of-print, second-hand games--money that would do nothing to
prtoect copyright, as such, because the games is no longer published.
Most of the time the purchasers of these games--say, ASL, or something
like that--have every intention of playing them in-person w/ a
competitor, so paying a premium makes sense in that case. In my case,
I have no opportunity for such play and would play exclusively via
Vassal pbem.
So what I am going to do is this: for every new game that I would
like to try on Vassal (in reality I will prob. never get to play them,
anyway) that is either out-of-print or not obviously obtainable from
the publisher (i.e., out of stock and no date for revival, etc.) or a
respectable dealer I will make a little $10 contribution to Vassal. I
know this isn't much, but I would not be purchasing anything physical;
likewise, it only pertains to the unavailable games. Additionally,
some games would still require the physical box for assorted reasons.
Money should, actually, go to Vassal in these cases. It is Vassal and
the wonderful designers creating the mods that deserve the credit most
of the time, anyway. That's why I was looking to pay something for
NFL Strategy (Gary Krockover) and will do the same for Panzer Leader
and Ardennes '44, should I have any time to do so.
Just a thought going forward.
