There are a number of features in VASSAL put there explicitly for mineatures games. For example: gridless playing surfaces, pieces that rotate to arbitrary facings, and the ability to specify a pixels-to-inches scale in the Line of Sight Thread. There are some features still on the to-do list, such as being able to lock adjacent figures into a group using the same facing.
