When you say you "went in an removed ..." I assume you mean
that you went into the Vassal module editor and removed the
items.  That just removes the references, but any images (where
the bulk of the space is used) that were previously included
in the module are still in the module file.

At the present, the only way to get rid of no longer needed images
is to open the module file with a zip utility and manually delete
the superfluous image files.

There are some plans to change this or at least provide tools to
handle this operation, but I'm not sure at what stage those plans
are right now.
