I'm not sure exactly what the process is, but this must be possible.

The Silent War module is able to do things similar to what you post  
below, so looking at that might give you some ideas:

In Silent War, there is a battle board, and after the battle, units  
are sent back to where they came from.  This is solitaire, but the  
module needs to record the starting location and then return the unit  
to the correct map location.
