I hadn't, but I have now.  It gives an error "Multiple step operation generated 
errors. Check each status value".  This error happens on the assignment 
statement but the other error that I mentioned actually happens on the next 
statement to affect the recordset (ie the next MoveNext or Update) which 
suggests it was happy to assign Null to the field and indeed using Null had 
updated 1 row but for some reason didn't want to move on to another.
Baffled.
