Baptiste Daroussin has created patches to get rid of the procfs
requirement on FreeBSD and I've modified and fixed them where
necessary to
get them into proper shape. The patches use sysctl(3) and should
work on
at least FreeBSD 6.2 and newer (did not have an older box to test it).
