I completely disagree with this statement. I have for the most part no issues. When one crops up the DEVs have been fast to react and take care of it leaving cleaner code. I feel it helps me by helping them and it provides for a better product.
I don't understand how you could say that testing against SVN makes no sense except right before a release. If you find an issue that can be fixed during the course of its development instead of waiting to the last few hours before deployment, things can actually be worked into the fix schedule instead of having to wait to find time after the release.
