one way, backup your host (take image or some sort of backup software) t 
external hard driveo before you start.

try
download "vbox" from oracle"
export the VMs to hardrive
uninstall  the old version
install the new vbox from downloaded earlier
import the vms back from external hard drive

if success, enjoy
otherwise, just restore your host from external hard drive


The aboe assumes your system partiton inlcuding the vox app storage is not 
overly humumgus for imaging/backup
