Thanks for your advice.

I got the device mounted as follow;

$ sudo mount -t iso9660 /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom
$ sudo sh /media/cdrom/VBoxLinuxAdditions-amd64.run
....
Installing the Window System drivers ...... fail?
(Could not find the X.Org or XFree86 Window System)

Failed.  It needs X window to install/work.

my bad
$ scp /usr/share/virtualbox/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso [email protected]:/root

then mount it on that vm
$ sudo mount /root/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso /mnt -o loop

afterwards, run the a suitable installer script in /mnt for your vm processor's 
architecture
