I really don't think that my problem is the fault of VBox, but I have
to start the troubleshooting process somewhere.
I had 4.0.2 installed on my work machine and tried to upgrade to 4.0.4
after having done so successfully on my home machine.
I am getting an error on my work box (XP Pro) that the 4.0.4 installer
can not create C:\Windows\Installer\{fancy code here}
Is this new with 4.0.4?
Anyway, I can't find a file or dir named "Installer" in the Windows
directory and I have tried with and without showing hidden files.
manually making a dir works from the command prompt in C:\windows
unless the name of the folder I want to create is "Install" or
"Installer".
The error message says that the file or folder by that name already
exists, but I can't find it.
I suspect that perhaps a GPO is preventing this activity. So I sent
an email to our helpdesk to ask. (I'm an admin of the work box for
the purposes of installing apps and conducting research.
On the off chance that there really is something wrong with my file
system and there really is a file or folder named "Installer" how do I
find it will NON-windows tools easily.
I could bring in a Ubunu Linux Live USB key and try to look at the
drive without Windows in the way, but I can't do that for a few days.
Anything else I can try in the mean time to ensure that the drive is
not an issue?
