VirtualBox does full virtualization because the guest does not need to be changed to make it run on VirtualBox. If a VMM does only support paravirtualization (e.g. Xen without VT-x or AMD-V) then the guest must be adapted to the VMM, otherwise it would not run. But VirtualBox (like other VMMs) takes advantage of paravirtualization as well as it adapts the guest to make it run better and faster on the hypervisor. Without VT-x / AMD-V, VirtualBox does runtime optimizations (code patching, code recompilation) of the guest to improve the performance and to make the guest run in an unprivileged mode (which would normally not work). Many of these adaptions are not required with VT-x/AMD-V. But still, even the Guest Additions adapt the guest to the VMM as they provide an optimized interface to the hypervisor to allow implementing a graphics card which performs better than an emulated legacy VGA device.
