It is possible to create an appliance which is sort of like what you describe, 
but it is not possible to hide the fact that what you will have is a VM with a 
guest OS with an application installed.  If you need to get access to files on 
the host or you need to get access to the network it can be tricky.  Have a 
look at the BitNami virtual appliances to see what is possible in this 
direction.
