Added info: I upgraded my Natty 11.04 test partition to 11.10 (same
laptop) last night & 3D *does* work properly in that partition.
Therefore the issue appears to be virtualbox related. I'll check the bug
reports and see if I can find one already filed... if not I'll file a
new one.
