Hi Tod,

I see no one has responded to your post.  Let me take a stab.

First, you can always look for (Guest) O/S specific backup solutions.
Your restore solution would be to re-create the environment and apply
the backup.

An alternative, which may not work at all!  :), is to use Virtualbox's
snapshot capability and save the snapshots.  Similar to a database's
log.  This probably won't work unless you're able to determine how
VirtualBox ensures a snapshot isn't played against another VM.  It may
be as simple as its GUID.  Your restore might be to create a new VM
and set its GUID to the previous VM.  I'm not sure it's possible but
it's something to try. 

The other possibility is to `rsync' the .VDI.  Restoring would be to
copy the .VDI back to the source.  Again, the GUID may be tied to the
.VDI so if you re-create the VM, you'll need to ensure its GUID
reflects the original.

The above are my ideas and some of them are extremely raw (as in,
half-baked) but it may give you some direction (to avoid?  :) to
experiment.
