In the VirtualBox manager are they selected? (Settings --> usb) also after you start XP in the Devices tab are the enabled? I have found in alot of cases I have to unplub the usb device and plug it in again for XP to see them. Especially my WD MyBook external drive. It usually detects my printer with no problem. Hope this will give you some more to look at.
