I've encountered nearly the exact same problem trying to use Ubuntu 11.10
(32-bit)running as a vm on a Win7(x86) host. Seems that the only network
configuration I can get to work is using a NAT connection on either the
firewall or the OS in VirtualBox never in tandem, which seems odd to me to
say the least. I had setup DSL(Damn Small Linux) as the firewall but
cannot seem to connect via ssh/ssl using Ubuntu. I've tried reconfiguring
the built-in 'ucf' on Ubuntu to allow ALL connections from the host through
to my OS's built in firewall and still no luck at all -- tunneling the port
results in a bad bridge -- tried every option I know how without any luck
so now I'm trying a lower version of Ubuntu to see if that will work.
Another problem I've noticed with virtualbox on my Win7 host is that it
will not allow me the option to save a 'fixed sized' virtual machine and
will only allow 'dynamic' option. Starting to become disappointed with
virtual box altogether...
