I had the same problem this week, on openSUSE 12.1.
And I was equally puzzled, but eventually found that if - when the
'start VM' window comes up - you select Settings and then USB, it will
say it has now disabled USB to allow the VM to start.
Once into the VM (WinXP in my case) go to its 'Devices' menu and select
"Install Guest Additions".
This will point to a VM file address. Just keep hitting 'proceed'
whenever it asks for confirmation, and it fetches the G.A. and installs
them.
USB then started working.
I don't know if that is the correct way out of the situation, but it
seems to have worked for me.
(If there is a 'proper' way, I would like to know what it is...)
