John,

This is my experience, which may or may not help.

I installed Debian 6.0 (Squeeze) on both a 64 bit system and a 32 bit
system. I then installed VirtualBox 4.x (I even installed a 3.x version,
but that didn't work either). Even with the Extension pack installed and
all of the latest Squeeze security updates, I could not get USB to work in
an XP client (with or without Guest Additions). After many attempts I
posted my problem and was advised of the need to add my non-root account to
the VB group, as Pablo has pointed out to you. However, I wasn't seeing any
errors regarding USB on either system. Around the same time I was also
given a different fix, but was advised by someone else that the fix was
probably more intrusive than adding my ID to the VB group.

Due to circumstances totally within my control, I was forced to re-install
the 32 bit system with the latest version of Debian (6.0.3). After
re-installing VB and the Extension pack, I finally saw the USB error that
indicated the need to add my non-root account to the VB group. At no time
prior to the rebuild did I _ever_ see that error, which was more than a
little frustrating. At this point I could see and access all USB devices
and select them in the "Devices" menu.

I don't recall if I installed the Guest Additions before or after
installing the Extension pack. I also don't recall using the CLI to install
the Extension pack.

If you have the option to re-install with the latest 6.0.4 Debian release,
it might work for you.
