You set the "Enable IO APIC" checkbox and update the XP HAL (Hardware
Abstraction Layer) executable using HALU.
Some people (myself included) report the guest then uses very high
CPU, so you have to revert back to a single CPU.  Perhaps take a
snapshot so you can easily revert back if anything goes wrong.
