Sorry for the spaminess, but given the commercial nature of the link, that was unavoidable. I've so far had good luck with P2V (converting Physical disks to (2) Virtual machines) with nothing more than dd (dd_rescue), or CloneZilla. But other people have had problems getting an image of an old machine working with VirtualBox, and P2V tools can probably help with that, adjusting device drivers and suchlike.
