  As an alternative you might consider
  installing VBox in its default system location
  and using the data files from your external hdd
  via links in ~/.VirtualBox ....

  This has worked very well for me under debian squeeze
  for the past 2 or 3 years ....

  Contents of /home/sk/.VirtualBox

    compreg.dat
    HardDisks -> /mnt/sdb/b13/vbox/HardDisks
    Machines  -> /mnt/sdb/b13/vbox/Machines
    VirtualBox.xml
    VirtualBox.xml-prev
    xpti.dat

  The HardDisks and Machines entries here
  are links to directories on another drive
  that is mounted at boot time via an entry
  in the  /etc/fstab  file ....

    /dev/disk/by-label/b13  /mnt/sdb/b13 ext3 defaults 0 2

  After the initial VirtualBox install
  move the HardDisks and Machines dirs
  to your external hdd and then create
  the links in ~/.VirtualBox ....
