As an alternative you might consider
installing VBox in its default system location
and using the data files from your external hdd
via links in ~/.VirtualBox ....
This has worked very well for me under debian squeeze
for the past 2 or 3 years ....
Contents of /home/sk/.VirtualBox
compreg.dat
HardDisks -> /mnt/sdb/b13/vbox/HardDisks
Machines -> /mnt/sdb/b13/vbox/Machines
VirtualBox.xml
VirtualBox.xml-prev
xpti.dat
The HardDisks and Machines entries here
are links to directories on another drive
that is mounted at boot time via an entry
in the /etc/fstab file ....
/dev/disk/by-label/b13 /mnt/sdb/b13 ext3 defaults 0 2
After the initial VirtualBox install
move the HardDisks and Machines dirs
to your external hdd and then create
the links in ~/.VirtualBox ....
