You may want to go online to the Microsoft Answers forums for help with
this. There is a forum for Windows XP. Just tell them you have a system that
does not recognize the USB devices and tell them what you see as symptoms in
hardware and Device Manager.  I would avoid the topic of having it installed
on a virtual machine and see how the troubleshooting goes.
