What is slow?  The CPU?  The video?  The disk usage?  Network?  USB?  Please be 
more specific.

Make sure you go into BIOS and enable all the virtualization technologies.  If 
it's a HP notebook ... Good luck, I hope those options are available to you.

Whatever number of CPU's you have in your system, assign less, but more than 1, 
to your guest.  If you have 4 cores, I say give 2 to the guest.

How much memory in your system?  How much assigned to the guest?

You say you moved the client from one system to another.  I think you should 
reinstall guest additions, using the guest additions provided by the new 
system.  (Make sure you got the right version, and only the right version.)

In my experience, storage done through VDI is slow.  You might want to 
partition your hard disk, and wrap the partition in vmdk, to give virtualbox 
direct access to the raw partition.
