Doing some more tinkering...posted on another list, got a recommendation 
to go with the MT adapter instead.  Dunno if it's actually different 
than the T - but trying it.

But while doing so, I checked something else.  That recommendation for 
the MT said there was "more tuning options" - so I installed a couple 
more packages.  Starting with ethtool & mii-diag.

It looks like my virtual NIC is thinking it should be 100BaseTx - not 
1000BaseTx.  Which I don't understand.  I've tried forcing it to 
1000BaseTx using ethtool - but I'm still not seeing the same ping times 
from this Linux guest that I am from a Windows guest.

My host adapters are connected at 100BaseTx if it means anything - but 
the Windows guest shows a 1G connection.
