I have also observed differences between virtualbox interfaces and real
interfaces, where packets are lost on vbox interfaces, the same works
with TAP or real interfaces:

It might be, that this is due to some "strange/supoptimal"
anti-promiscuous mode security feature or misconfiguration of guest
networking isolation settings, but I had no time to analyze it in depth yet.
