Hello all,

during testing I have come across a question others might have had before me.
Lets assume you have a host and four guests on it. All guest network cards are
bridged to the same amount of host network cards.
Now we monitor all network cards - physical and virtual - with snmp.
Interestingly we have the impression that the sum of the bridged network
traffic does not match the traffic on the physical card where it goes through.
I can imagine that this might be possible because the bridged network
configuration does not touch the hosts card in the sense that it is no network
traffic of the host (and host ip) but from a virtual bridge with totally
different (guest) interfaces.
Nevertheless this arises the question how to monitor the total amount of used
bandwith on the physical card. You may say: ask the switch port. But really I
would prefer to ask the host. I mean the data should be available somehow, but
how?

Stephan
