The number of Microsoft Updates that are available can depend on quite a few opt-in software packages, such as:

1. What Microsoft Software you have installed
2. What version of Internet Explorer you are running
3. Whether you have .NET frameworks 2, 3, 4 installed

If you confirm that you have network access when checking for Microsoft Update then the problem, if any, is a microsoft one, and is unlikely to be related to Virtualbox.
