I believe that what you created is not a bootable image of your
running desktop, but rather a bootable disk with a RESTORE PROGRAM to
restore your backup.

In any case, I think you could create a new virtualbox VM, make it
Win7, and before the first boot, make sure you have the bootable disk
mounted into the Virtualbox VM.

It is not clear from your post whether you have burned the boot CD to
a real (physical) CD-R o DVD-R, and where is your system backup stored
(internal hard drive, external HD? pen drive?).
