There were two: opensuse 13.1.vbox-prev and opensuse 13.1.vbox-tmp.  Both gave 
exactly the same result.

Could this be due to my updating before I tried the machine? I see no way to 
remove the old guest additions; the settings button is grayed out.

Thanks, it's there.  I'll try that tomorrow.  Hopefully I can build the machine 
without reinstalling suse.
