I am jumping in a little late here.  What is your keyboard set-up? 
Standard PS/2 keyboard or USB?  If you don't know it is likely the 
first, you can also check in the machine XML file (the ".vbox" file for 
the machine).  Or are you using a physical USB keyboard directly with 
the machine?  Can you start an Ubuntu live CD in the virtual machine to 
see if the keyboard works there?
