Bruce,

Not out of ideas yet! Hang in there, I had to learn this process by trial and
error myself some time back.

First, you must insert the thumb drive so the host OS sees it, but after doing
that you can’t attach it via the Devices/USB menu. That only works for CD/DVD
disks/images.

With the Thumb drive inserted and recognized by the Host OS, go into the Guest
settings and under the Ports/USB tab try adding a filter by clicking on the
button with the “+” sign(right hand side of window). Do you get the Thumb drive
listed? If the Thumb drive is listed then select it by clicking on it so it is
added as a filter then check the box on the left of the filter and exit the
settings dialog. Eject the drive via the Host OS. If the guest is not already
running then boot the guest and when booted insert the Thumb drive so VBox can
grab it for the Guest. You should be good to go. Otherwise continue reading
below.

If still no device list contents, then it looks like you have a major problem.
The Devices/USB menu should list all USB devices VBox sees. On mine it shows my
Thumb drive, greyed out since the Host has connected to it, my USB Mouse, the
builtin USB camera, USB card reader etc. If no USB devices appear then it
sounds like a major issue between VBox and the host OS. You can also click on
the picture of a USB connector on the bottom of the Guest window and it should
list all the devices as well. Have you rebooted the Host OS after installing
VBox and the Extension pack? It normally isn’t necessary, but I’m not familiar
with Linux enough to be sure. Good idea anyway for troubleshooting. If that
doesn’t work then reinstall VBox and the extension pack. Again, not a normal
need, but you have an abnormal problem.

Just had a thought, is your USB port built in or an external hub? Sometimes
VBox has issues with external hubs.

Let me know what you find.
