Thanks for the advice! As it turns out, I've actually run into this issue (

when cloning virtual machines; for some reason it didn't occur to me that
it could be happen on a fresh install (if that is indeed what's happening).
Anyway, the same solution works (deleting the file
"/etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules"). Maybe at some point I'll read
more about this MAC-address/ethernet-number phenomena and actually
understand what's happening and why, but for now I'm satisfied with my
limited functional understanding. Thanks again!
