I know, and that's the beauty of it: it's faking hard disks, and even its 
sizes can be controlled at a whim: with "modifyhd --resize" the hard disk 
is now suddenly bigger. This is much more complicated with real hard disks :)

Sure, the admin can shoot her/himself in the foot, but that's true for 
other options too. Not every filesystem may react the same when the 
filesystem is suddenly bigger. The OS might not even boot if the 
VirtualBox admin uses "modifyvm --memory 8" or "modifyvm --nictype ..."

I know all that, but again: 1) "growing" is supported 2) the option is 
called "--resize" (which is kinda misleading until one looks up the 
documentation) and 3) the OS has to deal with other machine alterations 
anyway (see above).

So, I don't see the technical reasoning here.

Well, besides "it's quite an effort, nobody sent patches and nobody is asking 
for it" :-)
