What is the timeline for the final release of version 5 ?
Usually Open-source projects are released when ready.
Being a long-time contributor, I believe releasing v5.0 will take
another 2-3 weeks.
For example whole v4.1 BETA cycle until 4.1.0 release was only 3 weeks. Why ?
Because even 4.1.0-BETA1 was already fairly stable, and despite deep
tests, I could not find many bugs.
About v5.0 cycle:
It is a *very* long cycle. Primarily, because v5.0-BETA1 was
pre-mature, released very unstable, alpha-quality.
And if I can find dozens of bugs in several hours of testing, as I did
in v5.0, the situation is very bad. It means, that v5.0 BETA has a lot
of bugs at the surface, and also deep inside. in v5.0, bugs were so
pervasive, that I was able to find bugs in nearly every single
component of VirtualBox, VMM, 3D graphics, GuestAdditions,
Drag-n-Drop, VBoxSVC, new Scaling, encryption, detachable VM, USB 3,
Seamless mode, SATA hot-plug, you-name-it... and several bugs in many
of those areas. Total amount of issues I found may be over 50.
But it is improving with BETA4 and RC1.
=======
So why 2 weeks vs 3 months ? 2 weeks for 4.1 BETA cycle, because it
was mostly stable on day-1. vs 3-months 5.0 BETA cycle - due to early
release of 5.0-BETA1 (should be called v5.0-ALPHA1 in my opinion),
buggy in multiple areas.
=======
v5.0 cycle is already like 3 months long, and it is mostly Drag-n-Drop
bugs still holding the release.
I hope it will be fixed in few weeks time.
Thank you very much.
So far I am not experiencing important issues.
Drag-n-Drop are not show stoppers for me.
Biggest problems I have been experiencing have
been the shared clipboard. After installing
vbox additions, shared clipboard is still no working for me :(
Also,
/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
assumes that on fedora systems, the kernel source is at
/usr/src/linux
When I install kernel-devel, it installs the skeleton sources at
/usr/src/kernels/<release.version-build#.fc#.Arch> such as
/usr/src/kernels/3.19.8-100.fc20.x86 , for example.
I looked at the script to see if I could change the path
to where the kernel skeleton sources reside.
I could no find the string "/usr/src/linux"
in any of the scripts that VB puts in /etc/init.d.
I assume it is hard coded somewhere?
For now, I will create a symlink to the actual dir in /usr/src/kernels.
Kind regards,
JD
