We never did a major release every 6-8 months. 4.0: 12/2010 4.1: 07/2011 (8 months) 4.2: 09/2012 (14 months) 4.3: 10/2013 (13 months) 5.0: 07/2015 (21 months) It would be much easier if we could drop supporting of older major releases quickly after a new major release but that's not possible. Support of older major releases takes a _lot_ of time. And even if it took 21 months for 5.0 after 4.3 was released that does not mean that there is no innovation.
