Not a solution for your problem, but to prevent it to come again.

Always use two drives. One for the system (Windows, Linux, whatever) and 
an other for the data.

The system don't have any reason to grow very much, depending of the 
system, of course, so can be made dynamic easily.

Data is very easy to copy from a disk to an other, so if the disk is too 
large, simply open an other, copy the relevant part and remove the old one.

It's the system that is difficult to move. That said it's possible to do.

anyway, you have virtualbox, so you can try going to a new smaller disk 
and see what happen.
