Hi Dr. Mehnert,
Thank you very much for the advice!
Unfortunately, it appears that I need even more guidance. First, I
uninstalled VirtualBox version 5.0.0. Then, I installed version 5.0.10.
(I changed my mind about removing VMs between these two steps, partly
because I thought I was complicating things.)
Next, I tried to start VirtualBox. It did indeed start, and for a
moment it looked like I was done fixing my problem (screenshot
attached), but then Windows gave a dialog box entitled "VirtualBox
Manager" which said:
"VirtualBox Manager has stopped working.
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will
close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
And the only option this dialog box gave was "Close program".
I've opened Event Viewer and begun to look for an event with a time
stamp near the time of this error, but I have yet to find it. Other
than digging through my computer's events, here are some ideas I've had
to go forward from here:
A) Try the same thing I just tried with version 5.0.8
B) Try the same thing I just tried with version 5.0.1, and then
5.0.2, etc., and see how close I can advance toward 5.0.10 before things
break.
C) Restore my computer to the last time VirtualBox was working
(version 5.0.0, well before I tried updating to 5.0.10), and then try
one or both of the prior ideas.
Am I premature entertaining those ideas before I'm done digging through
Event Viewer?
Sincerely,
Ben I.
P.S. On one mailing list to which I belong, people include screenshots
in the body of their messages or as attachments all the time. On yet
another list, many people attempt that and someone or other always
responds "please, no screenshots" (apparently because they don't always
come through). Does this community have a policy or guidelines
concerning screenshots?

Ben,
your problem was most likely fixed with VBox 5.0.8. Please upgrade to the
latest 5.0.x version (currently 5.0.10).
Kind regards,
Frank

Hi Everyone,
When I tried to update my version of VirtualBox not only did I fail
to do so, but it appears to me that I corrupted my copy of VirtualBox. I
tried updating from Version 5.0.0 directly to 5.0.10 on a Windows 8.1
host. Subsequently I used System Restore to undo the damage I had done.
Windows reported that System Restore completed successfully. But when I
tried to open one of my VMs, Windows gave me the following error in a
dialog box:
"WinVerifyTrust failed on stub executable: WinVerifyTrust failed with
hrc= Unknown Status 0x8009200D on 'Device\HarddiskVolume4\Program
Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VirtualBox.exe' (rc=-22919)
Please try reinstalling VirtualBox."
The Windows dialog box only gives the option "Abort", so I select
that, and immediately thereafter VirtualBox always spits up the following:
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine *Ben_Xubuntu_32_Personal2*.
The virtual machine *'Ben_Xubuntu_32_Personal2'* has terminated
unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1 (0x1). More details may be
available in *'C:\Users\User\VirtualBox
VMs\Ben_Xubuntu_32_Personal2\Logs\VBoxStartup.log'*.
Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component: MachineWrap
Interface: IMachine {f30138d4-e5ea-4b3a-8858-a059de4c93fd}
I'm inclined to take Windows' suggestion and reinstall VirtualBox
version 5.0.0, but before I risk further damage I thought I should check
in this forum first. How does the following procedure look?
1. Uninstall VirtualBox.
2. Delete the contents of the folder "VirtualBox VMs" (I backed them up
well before this problem) but not the folder itself.
3. Install VirtualBox 5.0.0.
4. Put my backup copies of my VMs into the folder "VirtualBox VMs".
5. Start VirtualBox.
6. Try to start my VMs.
Sincerely,
Ben Iannitelli
