Thanks for the hint. In fact I _enabled_ VT-x in the machine's BIOS (old
laptop, not on by default) and, eventually, it worked.

Even after I enabled VT-x the "Acceleration" tab did not appear in the
guest settings. I had to un-install VB and re-install it for that tab to be
accessible. I have left VT-x enabled.
