I seem to be having a problem where host-only networking is not accessible
from the host, only from the guests. I'm using VirtualBox 5.1.8 on MacOS
10.10.
On my host:
% VBoxManage list hostonlyifs
Name: vboxnet0
GUID: 786f6276-656e-4074-8000-0a0027000000
DHCP: Disabled
IPAddress: 192.168.56.1
NetworkMask: 255.255.255.0
IPV6Address:
IPV6NetworkMaskPrefixLength: 0
HardwareAddress: 0a:00:27:00:00:00
MediumType: Ethernet
Status: Up
VBoxNetworkName: HostInterfaceNetworking-vboxnet0
% ifconfig vboxnet0
vboxnet0: flags=8843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
ether 0a:00:27:00:00:00
inet 192.168.56.1 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.56.255
The VMs in question all have ethernet device #2 set to use vboxnet0
% VBoxManage showvminfo RS_Devel_tldhost01 | grep "NIC 2"
NIC 2: MAC: 08002776F67E, Attachment: Internal Network
'vboxnet0', Cable connected: on, Trace: off (file: none), Type: 82540EM,
Reported speed: 0 Mbps, Boot priority: 0, Promisc Policy: deny, Bandwidth
group: none
And the guest has the network configured:
[vagrant@tldhost01 ~]$ ip addr list dev eth1
3: eth1: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state
UP qlen 1000
link/ether 08:00:27:76:f6:7e brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
inet 192.168.56.11/24 brd 192.168.56.255 scope global eth1
valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
inet6 fe80::a00:27ff:fe76:f67e/64 scope link
valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
[vagrant@tldhost01 ~]$ ip route
default via 10.0.2.2 dev eth0 proto static metric 100
10.0.2.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 10.0.2.15 metric 100
169.254.0.0/16 dev eth1 scope link metric 1003
192.168.56.0/24 dev eth1 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.56.11
However, the guests can only ping each other, not the host (and obviously
vice versa)
[vagrant@tldhost01 ~]$ ping -c 1 192.168.56.1
PING 192.168.56.1 (192.168.56.1) 56(84) bytes of data.

[vagrant@tldhost01 ~]$ ping -c 1 192.168.56.12
PING 192.168.56.12 (192.168.56.12) 56(84) bytes of data.

rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.859/0.859/0.859/0.000 ms
What am I missing here?
