my only advice is: Use a stable OS for the host *and* use the host
itself as little as possible.

My host is plain vanilla debian 8 (stable); if I am forced to run
Win-X I have it in a VM. My main working VMs are primary Linux Mint
18.1 and secondary Win-7.

I for one would *by no means* use Win-X for anything mission
critical. Aside from tampering your privacy, Win-X is a mess:
unstable, unpredictable, uncontrollable. MS does what it wants to
your installation, including adding or removing (!) your software
and drivers. No-Go.
